8 Things A PSW Wants You to Know

There are many things a personal support worker can tell you.

They can tell you about why they chose this career path. They can tell you how becoming a PSW changed their life. They can tell you about all the different people they meet. They can mention how some days are hard and some days are fun. And these are just some of the examples! There are many things that a PSW wants you to know.

Many things occur within a day in the life of a personal support worker. It’s a situation where if you know, you know. Although it might not be suitable for everyone, PSW’s have an important job to do. From early mornings and late nights, PSW’s are the superheroes that people may not fully recognize yet. Whether you are one, you know one or want to be one, here is what a PSW would want you to know:

  1. PSWs don’t work only at retirement homes.

This is definitely the most assumed fact. Yes, being a PSW at a retirement home is a common location to work, but it is not the only place a PSW can work. Other PSW work-settings include: private home-care, long-term care home and clinical care settings.

  1. We care for everyone equally.

There are no favourite patients or people. There is not one person we like less or more than another! We try to make everyone feel as comfortable and equal as possible. Everyone has the right to proper care and responsibility. We know from the moment we walk in, it is someone’s well-being in our hands, most of the time quite literally.

  1. Yes, there are certain emotions we must disregard in our job.

Have you noticed the word ‘personal’ in PSW? Our jobs really do mean personal. We are taught to break our personal bubble in order to be able to care in the best way possible. It takes a certain type of person to do the job that a PSW does, but we are taught how to. PSW’s perform personal care such as: assisting with eating, dressing, toileting, bathing and much more.

  1. We are not the nurse or doctor, we work with them.

Often, the public can assume that PSW’s are the only source of care-giving, which is not true. PSW’s are part of a team that help patients obtain the care they need. PSW’s work under either one or more Registered Healthcare Professionals such as a registered nurse. Together, we follow a strict schedule to perform all tasks properly.

  1. There are certain things we cannot control.

Due to the fact that we are not doctors/prescribers and basically only human, there are some things that are beyond our control. When our shifts are over, they are over because we have a schedule to follow and certain number of hours we can work as well. We are not a mind-readers, nor can we tell the future. The one thing we know we are, is caregivers and when we are with our patients, we give them all the care we can provide and nothing less. Everything we can’t do, is often just not possible within the walls of the workplace.

  1. We always try our absolute hardest.

We push through our days. We work with a smile and try to provide the best experience for every patient – if it is more than one. We focus and give all the attention and compassion we can give. We try to treat the people we help like our own family because that’s what family is all about in the first place. Caring for the people that matter.

  1. If we are taking a break, it’s because we really need one.

Otherwise, we would not stop. Realistically, we are probably taking the only break of the day. Yes, patients are top priority, but if we can’t perform our best for patients then we aren’t doing the job right. We knew exactly what we signed up for, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  1. We want you to know there is no better feeling knowing we get to make a difference in someone’s life.

They tell us about the amazing feeling in school, but you don’t know until you experience it. In this job, you can make life-long relationships with not just patients. There’s friends, family and coworkers you meet along this journey. At the end of the day, it’s that special feeling inside knowing that you made a difference in someone’s life that tells you everything was worth it.

Giving quality care for others who are unable to do so is an incredible job to take pride in and this is exactly what PSWs do.  If you are someone who is ready to embark or wants to learn more about a career as a Personal Support Worker at Trillium College, visit this page to learn more information.

Following These Easy Steps Will Help You Enhance Your Esthetic Career

Esthetics was made for you and you were made for esthetics. Have you thought about how to enhance your esthetic career?

Being in the field of esthetics is rewarding and challenging all at once, ask any esthetician yourself. The world of health and beauty is more than just meets the eye, as lots of estheticians have learned. What is so great, is that the esthetics industry is thriving more and more every year with passionate people who want to make a difference as well! With so much to learn and do, the esthetics industry has enough room for everyone to showcase their talent.

There are many reasons why the esthetics industry is relevant in today’s society. Plain and simple, we care about how we look like. Image, body image, and beauty are important in people’s lives. There are various ways to enhance beauty whether it is naturally or clinically. What makes estheticians’ jobs so special, is that they make people feel beautiful in their own skin. This is important because, at the end of the day, customer service is everything. It is a big role in the career of an esthetician.

You have the skillset, the experience, and the career to succeed in your field, but did you know you can enhance it? No matter what area of esthetics you are in, or want to be in, following these simple steps can make all the difference in your career! Let’s take a look at what these steps are and why they are important for an esthetician:

Find what works best for you.

There is a chance that you might not like or feel 100% comfortable with the type of esthetics you are doing. Whichever position you have, make sure that you feel happy doing it. If you’re doing something you don’t like just for money, or for an opinion, or because someone told you to and you’re not truly happy doing it, chances are you should stop. Doing something that doesn’t truly make you happy can not only cause emotional stress but could also reflect in your work ethic. It’s never too late to find something that works for you because at the end of the day you are in control of your own life and deserve to be happy in your career. If you have to spend extra time or money into figuring at what that is, we encourage you. Once you do, you will be happy and most importantly so will your clients. The better you are, the better the service is and the better your career will be! After all, once you love what you’re doing, you won’t have to work a day in your life.

Incorporate a little bit of marketing.

It’s time to show everyone what you can do! If you don’t already have any social media pages, you need to do this now. In a world of personal image, social media is huge and where all your clients probably are. This is a way to not only showcase your work but continue to build relationships with customers/clients. Whether you work from home or at a salon, you can start by telling your clients about your social media pages. This way they can keep up with what you’re doing, communicate easier, and once again feel closer and comfortable with you. On social media, you can not only show the work that you do, but customers can have a sense of pride to be shown on your page. Some social platforms let you include location, hashtags and many other tools to enhance or optimize your social media posts. This is definitely something to look into to continue to grow your customers and to build relationships with them.

Build your clientele strategically.

No this does not mean literally steal other people’s clients. Whether you’re beginning or already have some sweet loyal customers, it is important to know how to manage them and keep them coming back. Going the extra mile does not hurt to do and ends up being worth the time and effort. Good examples of tools you can use for your customers are; business cards with your information, light refreshments, gift certificates, a small guide for aftercare in whichever service that you provide. Treat your customers like friends and family; make them feel at home whenever you provide a service. It is also good to maintain healthy relationships with clients too. This could include; keeping up a good and safe conversation while maintaining cleanliness of your work area. If you are still new to these customer service ideas, that’s okay. There are many tools online to help you with people skills. If you have to practice this, practice it. As mentioned, try to literally make your clients feel at home. If you already do your work from home, make them feel as comfortable as possible. This will leave them coming back and spreading the word.

Have an open mind.

Like a lot of things in the world, change is inevitable. Not everything stays the same which means the world of esthetics probably doesn’t either. It is a good idea to stay in the know of the esthetic community somehow. Whether it is by following online or attending events, the more knowledge is an asset for you! It would be like staying one step ahead of a lot of people. There are always new tips, tricks, products, skills and much more to look out for in the esthetics industry. Other ways to stay in the know are to; follow blogs, follow social media accounts on either Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., talking to your co-workers, talking to clients, and attending network events. Continue to regularly do these things so that you can not only stay updated about your field but grow inspiration. Even if something sounds outrageous at first, don’t be quick to judge. Keep an open mind and stay eager to learn!

Be patient.

Last but not least. Things don’t always happen overnight. Remember real success takes hard work and effort. As long as you make goals and stay on track, anything can happen. You’re passionate about what you do, and it will show in your work. Whether you are beginning or continuing in esthetics, stay inspired and be patient. Some days might feel long and maybe like you’re not getting anywhere. Don’t doubt yourself and remember why you love what you do!

There are many amazing jobs out there for everyone, but how do you know it’s really for you?

Simple: you will want to choose it and it will change your life. For a lot of people, becoming a PSW has done that for them. There are so many rewarding aspects that come from taking on this role as a career and it’s clear that the people who do are greatly appreciated. Like every career, especially when someone’s care is in your hands, can also be challenging, but nonetheless, a truly rewarding experience.

So what does it really take to be a personal support worker?

You have to be willing to work hard.

You have to be okay with stepping out of your comfort zone.

You have to separate your personal feelings from your work.

You need to have a whole lot of patience.

You have to trust yourself.

You need to have respect.

You need to really and truly care.

If you naturally have all these qualities, then awesome and maybe you want to consider choosing a career as a PSW, but if you do not, that’s totally okay too because all of these qualities are attainable!

As a PSW, you take care of people who physically cannot take care of themselves. This may be done at a retirement home, privately out of home, in a hospice care, long-term care facility, etc. If you haven’t realized by now, being a PSW is no easy job and it might not be for everyone. There is a lot of expectations strict guidelines and it is a big responsibility. However, as scary as it sounds there are some pretty amazing things that also come with being a PSW. You get to build relationships with the people you take care of, commonly senior citizens, as well as their families. When you think about it, the people that you take care of are also people who are loved.

You basically wake up knowing that you get to make a difference in someone’s life. More than often, the people you help and their families will be forever grateful for you. There are good days and bad days, good times and bad times, through it all if there is one thing you should remember it’s that you are the reason why someone is getting the care they need, because if you didn’t, who else would?

What To Expect When You Become An Esthetician

If you chose to pursue a career as an esthetician it’s probably for a few reasons.

Whether you like makeup, have great customer service skills or have always had a passion about making a difference in the beauty world, you have a pretty good idea of why you chose to study esthetics. As many other programs, it is one experience to study and learn about esthetics, but practicing can sometimes even be different from what you expected.

Like any post-secondary program, we learn from our professors’ experiences and the fundamental skills required in order to succeed in the industry we want to be part of. It is what we choose to do with our skillset that determines the way our careers shape out to be. The truth is, everyone will probably have a different path to their own success, which is okay. As long as you are passionate about what you are doing, the rest should come naturally.

There are many different career opportunities in esthetics that range from salon and spa treatment, to at home salon practices. The possibilities and types of employment are quite high, which is yet another great opportunity for young talent. The great part about esthetics, no matter what type, is that you always get to gain experience. There are tons of certificates available to enhance specific skills such as eye-lash extensions, hair removal practices and much more, so that you can basically make a name for yourself in your career.

The world of esthetics is fun, exciting and rewarding, you could even ask an esthetician yourself! Once you are certified, as mentioned, there are various employment positions. Throughout them all, there are definitely some common denominators between them, things that you can probably find no matter what job you take on.

Client and customer service.

Being an esthetician means to provide a service to customers who want to enhance a certain type of beauty feature by using their own knowledge and creativity, all while following safe health practices at the same time. This essentially means that you will always be working with the public and create experiences for them. Whether you’re doing this out of an office, privately, or out of your home, it is a very large part of the job, which means it’s important to master great customer service skills. This could mean; engaging in thoughtful conversations, greeting and smiling, listening to any wants and needs and basically anything else that comes with the skill of customer service.

Schedules and organization.

Providing a service and experience for clients means that you have to literally make the time for it. Some jobs do indeed have receptionists or assistants to sort out these small details, but it’s not always the case. It’s important to know how much time you, the esthetician, needs in order to create the best experience that the client requests. Knowing this in advance, is a huge benefit to you and or a possible team in terms of organization and again providing the best service for the customer/client. The last thing that you want is having an overlapping client or providing an inconvenience.

Your creativity!

No matter what, this is the one thing that will be timeless and remain the same throughout any jobs. More often than enough, there will be instances where your own judgement, advice and input will be needed with a client. At the end of the day, you are the certified esthetician who knows what is happening in the health and beauty industry, which is why they trust your opinion the most. Whether they ask you what hairstyle looks best or what colour to choose on nails, the great part about the job is that you can always use your creative input.

The world of esthetics definitely has its ups and downs. However, at the end of the day, nothing is better knowing that you get to help make a difference in the beauty world. If you are a student who wants to learn more information about employment services at Trillium College, click here!

My Rewarding Career as a Medical Office Assistant

What should I share and what do people want to know.  So I thought of a couple of things that I wanted to know before I chose my career path as a Medical Office Assistant and this is what I came up with.

The Evolving Career

When you think of a Medical Office Assistant, the first thing that may come to mind is that person who is sitting behind the desk at the doctor’s office.  Well, there is more to it than that. People in this profession work in a wide variety of settings and perform duties that are becoming more and more complex.

Seventy years ago, a medical secretary job advertisement would consist of someone with good telephone manners and who is good with people. This sounds easy enough. Today however, the qualifications that an organization or physician is looking for in a Medical Office Assistant is definitely more complex. Some of these qualifications include knowledge of medical terminology, office administration, electronic medical records (EMR), billing, scheduling, medical transcription, typing skills of 50 wpm, various computer software applications, CPR certification, and more, including good telephone manners and being good with people. Sounds like a lot, but when you break it down into smaller pieces, the puzzle can be completed and is achievable.

Your Opportunities

Once you have obtained the knowledge and skills through a Medical Office Assistant program and gained experience, the career path choices are endless.  You may find that the career title may be a little different from office to office or organization to organization, such as medical secretary, unit clerk, medical office administrator, administrative assistant, executive assistant, but the skills you obtain along the way can be applied to any of these positions.

Here is more information on Medical Office Assistant Opportunities.

Examples of organizations that you may find a career in include medical offices, clinics, hospitals, alternative/allied health care facilities, long-term care facilities, insurance companies, provincial or territorial health offices, medical supply companies, medical transcriptions facilities, veterinary practices, dental offices, social services, community agencies and the list goes on…

Being a Medical Office Assistant is quite a rewarding career. Not only do you play an integral part on the health care team, but the satisfaction of being a part of the team that helps those in need of medical care is quite fulfilling.

Get the Facts About Healthcare Careers in Ontario

At Trillium College, we offer more programs in the healthcare industry than in any other industry. And with good reason– the demand for healthcare professionals continues to rise in Ontario.

With an aging population increasing in size, there is a growing demand for trained professionals to work in a field that has no limitations. Will you leverage the province’s changing demographics to your advantage and pursue a career in healthcare?

We’ve pulled relevant information from the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report about the prospective job outlook for each one of our healthcare courses.

Advanced Esthetics and Spa Operations

This diploma program gives you the hands-on training and expertise to perform professional client consultations, facials, hair removal, manicures, pedicures, specialized body treatments and more.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report:

For the 2016-2018 period, the employment outlook is expected to be good for Estheticians, electrologists and related occupations (NOC 6562) in Ontario.

Employment in this occupational group has shown strong growth over the past decade. The majority of these workers are employed in the personal care services sector. Other key employers can be found in the retail trade industry, mainly in health and personal care stores.

Job opportunities for this group are dependent on population growth, but more so, mostly driven by consumer discretionary spending. Although personal care trends can shift, there are indications that there have been increased interests and usage for some of these services, maintaining demand in this field. A fair number of estheticians, electrologists and related occupations are self-employed. They can increase their client base by keeping up to date with the latest trends and by using social media tools for self-marketing.

Intra Oral Dental Assistant Program Level 1 & 2

Our diploma program is one of the most in-depth dental assistant programs offered. It gives you the theoretical knowledge and practical skills and experience needed to work competently, effectively and safely as a dental assistant.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report:

For the 2016-2018 period, the employment outlook is expected to be fair for Dental assistants (NOC 3411) in Ontario.

In Ontario, the overwhelming majority of dental assistants are employed in the offices of dentists. They can also work in clinics supervised by dental hygienists.

Employment growth in this field is dependent on the demand for dental services. Over the past decade, a growing and aging provincial population and increasing public awareness of the importance of oral hygiene has spurred demand for dental services. In addition, the ongoing expansion of geriatric dentistry and the access to improved cosmetic, aesthetic and orthodontic procedures will continue to support demand in this field. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover most dental services, yet for several years now, more private spending on dental services has been coming from insurance than from patients’ pockets.

Massage Therapy

This program introduces you to a variety of Swedish soft tissue manipulation techniques. You will develop the knowledge and skills to assess clients’ needs and develop treatment plans.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report:

For the 2016-2018 period, the employment outlook is expected to be fair for Massage therapists (NOC 3236) in Ontario.

This outlook is the result of an analysis of a number of factors that influence employment prospects in this occupation. Some of the key findings are that:

  • Employment growth is expected to be strong.
  • A small number of people are expected to retire.
  • This occupation has recently experienced low levels of unemployment.

Medical Lab Assistant/ Technician

This diploma program gives you the knowledge and practical skills needed to play an important role in promoting community health while working under the direct supervision of physicians, registered medical technologists and other healthcare professionals.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report:

For the 2016-2018 period, the employment outlook is expected to be fair for Medical laboratory technicians and pathologists’ assistants (NOC 3212) in Ontario.

This outlook is the result of an analysis of a number of factors that influence employment prospects in this occupation. Some of the key findings are that:

  • Employment growth is expected to be strong.
  • A large number of people are expected to retire.
  • This occupation has recently experienced low levels of unemployment.

Medical Office Assistant

Our Medical Office Assistant curriculum provides you with the in-depth training in medical terminology, medical administration procedures and the medical transcription skills needed to effectively support our communities’ medical professionals.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report:

For the 2016-2018 period, the employment outlook is expected to be fair for Medical administrative assistants (NOC 1243) in Ontario.

Employment of medical administrative assistants has remained relatively stable in Ontario over the past few years. Over half work in offices of physicians, while a significant portion is also employed in hospitals. Although hospital downsizing across Ontario may temper employment growth, increased provincial funding to promote community-based health initiatives and clinics targeting specific demographics or health specializations may contribute to opportunities in this field. Job opportunities will also arise due to the high portion of medical administrative assistants nearing retirement age in the province.

Candidates with training in medical office administration should have the best opportunities for securing employment, though applicants with administrative experience in a doctor’s office may also be considered by some employers. Medical administrative assistants are expected to work closely with both doctors and the general public, therefore strong interpersonal and customer service skills are assets for job seekers. Employment opportunities are also improved for candidates familiar with medical terminology, and who have a strong working knowledge of healthcare information system software, such as electronic medical records, and Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) billing.

Personal Support Worker

Trillium College delivers the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) program, providing a solid educational base for workers who provide long-term care and support services in both institutional and community settings.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank Job Market report:

For the 2016-2018 period, the employment outlook is expected to be fair for Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates (NOC 3413) in Ontario.

This outlook is the result of an analysis of a number of factors that influence employment prospects in this occupation. Some of the key findings are that:

  • Employment growth is expected to be strong.
  • A large number of people are expected to retire.
  • This occupation has recently experienced low levels of unemployment.

Working as a Medical Office Assistant

Working as a Medical Office Assistant

Our Medical Office Assistant diploma program prepares students for a career in medical administration. As the Canadian population ages, the medical field is experiencing rapid growth, creating demand for a huge range of careers in medical administration.

Our graduates find well-paying jobs in offices, clinics, and hospitals as:

  • Receptionists
  • Administrative assistants
  • Office managers
  • Medical transcriptionists
  • Medical billing clerks
  • Unit/ward clerks
  • Patient registration clerks

But what does a typical day in the life of a medical office assistant look like? Given the scope of job options, there are many possibilities. Our example graduate, Laura, can fill in the details of what an average workday for her looks like. Although some of the details might change, any job as a medical office assistant will include similar tasks and responsibilities.

A Day in the Life: Laura Smith, Clinic Office Manager

Laura is a 29-year-old graduate who works full-time as Dr. Greene’s office manager. Dr. Greene is a busy cardiologist who splits her time between her private office, where Laura has worked for three years, and the local hospital. Laura’s role is to care for all clerical aspects of Dr. Greene’s practice, while Dr. Greene’s nurse looks after clinical aspects.

8:00 am: Laura arrives at office, ahead of other staff. She unlocks the door, turns off the alarm and turns on all the computers and tablets. She records a new voicemail stating today’s availability. Laura listens to voicemail messages and checks office e-mail, taking note of any cancellations or urgent messages. She calls patients from her waiting list to fill any same-day cancellation slots.

8:30 am: Greets Doctor Greene and the office nurse as they arrive, updating them on the day’s schedule and any urgent patient messages.

9:00 am: Laura greets the first patient as he arrives. She confirms his demographics and OHIP information is up-to-date in medical record software. After discovering the patient had recent blood work done that is not on his file, she calls the lab to have it sent over immediately before the doctor sees him.

9:30 am: Laura continues registering patients as they arrive. In between patient arrivals, she processes all documents that have arrived since the last work day. She files lab work electronically in patients’ electronic medical records, prints off prescription renewals for the doctor to sign, and sets aside referral requests to deal with later in the day.

10:00 am: The phone is ringing off the hook. Calls include ones from a pharmacist who needs a Limited Use code for a prescription the doctor just sent in, an Emergency Room nurse who is caring for one of Dr. Greene’s patients, and another doctor who wants to speak with Dr. Greene about a mutual patient.

11:00 am: Laura registers a first-time patient and creates electronic medical record for her. She helps the patient fill out basic paperwork and enter her demographics and allergies into her medical record. The new patient forgot her lengthy list of medications at home, so Laura calls her pharmacy to get a list sent over right away for the doctor’s review.

12:00 pm: Lunchtime.

12:30 pm: Laura calls tomorrow’s patients to remind them of their appointments. She leaves messages for any who do not answer, reminding them to bring their health card and list of medications.

1:30 pm: Processes referrals. Laura sorts referrals by urgency, according to office guidelines. She finds appointments for each patient, sending their appointment times and instructions to their referring doctor.

2:30 pm: After finding out that Dr. Greene is attending a conference next Friday that she forgot to mention, Laura begins rescheduling all of that day’s patients. There are few openings in the doctor’s schedule, so this task requires patience and problem-solving.

3:30 pm: A patient arrives without an appointment, explaining that he urgently needs to see the doctor. After asking the patient questions and discussing the situation discreetly with the office nurse, Laura adds him to the day’s schedule.

4:30 pm: Although the patients should all be gone by now, there are still a few patients to be seen. The doctor is running overtime and patients are restless in the waiting room. Laura stays until all patients are seen, making their follow-up appointments and booking any tests the doctor ordered for them.

5:30 pm: After recording a new voicemail stating that the office is now closed and checking the office e-mail one last time, Laura finishes her workday by turning off the computers and lights, setting the alarm and locking the door.

After reading what a typical day for Laura looks like, it’s clear that working as a medical office assistant is a demanding profession that requires:

  • Multitasking
  • Attention to detail
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Excellent people skills

A career as a medical office assistant can be immensely rewarding. Medical office assistants act as a liaison between patients who need help and the practitioners who can offer that help. They assist people in their most vulnerable moments and help them navigate the healthcare system. Medical office assistants often make the difference between a patient falling through the cracks or getting the help they need, when they need it.

If you love people, enjoy being organized, and want to make a difference, then a career as a medical office assistant might be the perfect fit for you!
