This year came in strong with its challenges, and with half of it already gone by, our question to you is: What skills have you already developed?
Skill trades are taking a new leap in Canada. With a growing demand for housing, there is an increasing demand for skilled electrician jobs. However, 2025 will demand higher skill development for these jobs.
✅ Tool Handling: Knowing the safe and efficient use of hand tools like pliers, wire strippers, and screwdrivers, along with familiarity with power tools like drills and saws
✅ Measurement and Layout: Knowing how to use measuring tapes, levels, and rulers efficiently and creatively to mark out electrical box placements with accuracy
✅ Digital & Tech Literacy (2025-Relevant): Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook to create and communicate documents like invoices. Additionally, being accustomed to the basics of smart lighting, thermostats, and security systems. Using digital work orders, electrical diagram apps, and code reference tools on tablets/smartphones
✅ Basic Wiring & Circuitry: Being able to read simple wiring diagrams, stripping wires, installing outlets, switches, and light fixtures
✅ Teamwork & Communication: Taking instructions from journeypersons and maintaining clear verbal and written communication
✅ Basic Electrical Code Understanding: Awareness of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and knowing where and how to look up code references
As and when new developments take place, the list goes on. One of the most important skills to possess in today's market is continuous learning. Knowing when and how to upskill is a skill for 2025.
